The goal of the PETS program – Paws, Ears, Tails, and Smiles – is to reduce seniors’ isolation and loneliness by providing the resources needed to ensure their pet companions have high-quality lives, in turn easing the burden of pet care for the owner. HSRC’s Nutrition & Activities Program is able to offer the PETS program thanks to grants from Meals on Wheels America and PetSmart Charities®, as well as community support.
Those enrolled in the PETS program receive assistance with fulfilling basic pet care needs such as pet food. The PETS Program can provide food delivery and veterinary wellness services for eligible pets.
Statistics show that having a pet significantly decreases feelings of loneliness and isolation for older adults. Like all of our programs at HSRC, the PETS program is intended to help older adults in our community to happily and healthily age in place.
The PETS program assists older adults age 60 and older who live in low-income households. Income verification is required, and participant eligibility is recertified annually. PETS program participants must live in Arcata, Eureka, Fortuna, McKinleyville or Rio Dell – areas served by the HSRC Senior Nutrition Program.
Once approved for the program, participants can be provided food monthly by request for up to two in-home pets owned by the eligible senior. The amount of food provided is based on the type and size of pet. Unfortunately, food for specialty diets cannot be provided.
