Low-cost firewood vouchers will be sold starting August 17, 2020 by the Humboldt Senior Resource Center (HSRC).   Households with an individual 55 or older and living on a low to moderate income are eligible to purchase one firewood voucher.    Vouchers are priced on a sliding scale costing between $100-150 (tax included in the fee) based upon the purchaser’s household size and monthly household income.   Once purchased, the voucher can be redeemed for one cord of wood at the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program (SWAP) lot in Eureka starting on August 29, 2020.

To purchase a voucher:

  • You will first need to call our HSRC Senior Service Office representative at 707-502-0610 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. beginning August 17, 2020.
  • When you call, your name will be added to a firewood purchasing list.
  • Staff will contact the people on the purchasing list, in the order calls were received, to schedule a phone appointment during which the HSRC representative will confirm program eligibility, ask application questions, and set the time for an in-person appointment.
  • In-person appointments will take place at HSRC, 1910 California Street, Eureka.  Purchasers must wear a facemask to enter the building. Purchasers will need to provide proof of age, proof of income, and payment at this appointment. Bring identification (such as a driver’s license) and documentation to prove your total household income; acceptable proof includes a 2019 tax return, a Social Security award letter, two current paycheck stubs, or your two most recent bank statements showing direct deposits of income. We do not accept any handwritten documents as proof of income.  Payment for the vouchers can be made by cash or local check only.

A wood pick-up day will be assigned at the time of voucher purchase, or a delivery driver can be assigned for an additional fee.  On pick-up days, SWAP staff and attendees at the lot will direct and load your wood for you.  The wood will be placed in your vehicle loosely — it will not be stacked.  A cord of wood is 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet stacked. Those with smaller trucks may need to make multiple trips on the scheduled wood pick-up dates.  If using a delivery driver, a fee, based on delivery location, is paid to the driver when the wood is delivered. Drivers will deliver from Rio Dell to Patrick’s Point.

Effort is made to ensure the wood is between 16 and 18 inches long.  The type and quality of wood varies, ranging from pine to madrone, to redwood to oak and more.  Some of the wood may have been cut months ago; others may have been cut the day before pick up.  There is no guarantee of the type or quality received.  Historically, people usually receive a mixture.
