Each month Senior News tells stories about local seniors and local issues of importance to elders, their families, and their caregivers. Unique in Northern California, this 24-page monthly newspaper is distributed along a 150-mile stretch of the northwest California coast. This nonprofit newspaper is funded by local businesses and nonprofits through advertising dollars.
Monthly circulation is 11,000 copies, with 5,000 distributed by volunteers to more than 100 stores, restaurants and meeting places from Crescent City to Garberville; almost 6,000 included the Eureka Times-Standard newspaper on the last Tuesday of each month; and 200 mailed directly to subscribers nationwide.
Senior News serves the largest growing demographic in Humboldt County. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, seniors (65 and over) comprise 13.2 percent of the population in Humboldt. Senior News has been published by the Humboldt Senior Resource Center since 1981.
A two-person staff is augmented by community volunteer writers and a senior advisory board.
