6. I don’t
have any family with Alzheimer’s. Why should I give?
You may know a family that is impacted by this disease. Your gift has
the potential to change their lives. Alzheimer’s has been called
“the long goodbye” because of its enduring, painful effects
on families. Supporting the New Alzheimer’s Center directly supports
families in our community who are coping with this tragic situation.
In addition, your tax-deductible donation stays in Humboldt
County, benefiting our friends and neighbors. This is a local project
with a direct impact on local residents’ quality of life.
From an economic perspective, the New Alzheimer’s
Center will have a positive impact on our community by:
- helping to revitalize the neighborhood
- using local labor for construction
- creating 19 new jobs
7. How much
will this project cost and how do you plan to pay for it?
Current estimates are $4.5 million. We will work with the project architect
to secure the lowest bids possible.
• We expect to raise approximately two-thirds in grants
and loans from foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
• We are seeking one-third in tax-deductible gifts and loans from
individuals, local businesses and community groups.
Only about 5% of the project costs are being used to raise
the funds needed to build the Center. A project budget is available upon
request.
8. Can’t
the government pay for this project?
We hope to receive as much as 33% of the project costs from grants requests
to the state and federal governments. However, the campaign to build the
Center will not be successful without generous community support.
9. How will
you support the Center once it is built?
The New Alzheimer’s Center will accept Medi-Cal, Veteran’s
Administration reimbursement, and private payments from individuals on
a sliding scale basis to help pay for program costs.
An Operating Budget has been developed, which shows the
New Alzheimer’s Center will be self-sustaining from the day it opens
its doors.
10. When
will it be built?
We hope to raise gifts and pledges of $4.5 million by the end of 2007
and complete construction in 2008.
11. Can I
spread my payments out over a few years?
Yes, you can spread your pledge over one, two or three years. We will
work with you to set up a payment schedule tailored to your needs. See
Many Ways to Give for more information.
12. Is there
a way to publicly honor a loved one with my gift?
Yes, we encourage everyone to memorialize or honor their loved ones, and
we are offering special ways to display these
tributes.
13. Are there
other ways I can help besides donating cash?
Here are some other options to consider:
- Donate appreciated stock or stock options.
- Give a zero-interest loan.
- Remember the New Alzheimer’s Center in your
will.
See Many Ways to Give for more information.
14. Why
is the building called the New Alzheimer's Center if you will help people
with all types of dementia?
"The New Alzheimer's Center" is a working title for the new
facility. Alzheimer's is the most common type of dementia, and most people
are familiar with the term "Alzheimer's disease" but might not
know what "dementia" means. And, of course, at some point the
building will no longer be "new." We are not yet sure what the
building will be named upon completion.
We hope that a generous donor will be interested in making
a donation that allows for a naming opportunity
of the entire building.
